Holding Our Course

Surging Ahead

Heading into the second quarter of 2023, all of us at De Francesca Law are focused on new opportunities for building on our distinctive strengths with more services and better solutions for our clients. With the challenges of COVID-19 largely behind us, Ontario real estate is dealing with high interest rates and inflation, creating a business mood best described as cautious and in need of a new slate of options for our future growth.

DFL is sensitive to the impact of these conditions and we’re standing firm on our resolve to deliver quality of service and attentiveness to our engagements. Over the past year we’ve been actively revisiting our client offering and taken the initiative to introduce new businesses that we think will resonate. The result is two expanded practices – Commercial Leasing and Wills and Estates – that are valuable extensions to DFL’s suite of services that signal solid future growth for the firm.

New Directions

DFL is growing in leaps and bounds. Our Commercial Leasing and Wills and Estates practices are off and running and going strong, headed up by myself and Andrew Kirk, in Commercial Leasing, and Amanda Carpenter in Wills and Estates. For more information about either of these, please reach out to me directly (416-778-4433 ext. 222 or paul@defranlaw.com) or Andrew at (416) 778-4433 ext. 225 or andrew@defranlaw.com. Or for Wills and Estates, contact Amanda at (416) 778-778-4433 ext. 223 or by email at amanda@defranlaw.com.

Below, we highlight our expanded Commercial Leasing practice. Watch for a profile on Wills and Estates in our next issue.

Commercial Leasing

Negotiating leases can be a drain on your time and financial resources but well-executed agreements are essential for managing your business risks effectively and protecting your interests. The key here is in engaging an experienced commercial leasing lawyer who’s well versed in the specialized language of leasing, to ensure your legal rights are fully protected in accordance with industry standards.

DFL’s commercial leasing group expertly assists clients – both landlords and tenants – in managing all aspects of commercial lease agreements in the industrial, retail and office sectors, to maximize business efficiencies throughout the process and mitigating any potential risk. Whatever the need, whether it’s assisting in letters of intent or lease negotiations, advising on property management issues, or drafting additional lease assignment, default or other documentation, our leasing team has the knowledge and experience to advance your legal interests.

DFL Awards and Bursaries

Toronto Metropolitan University - Lincoln Alexander School of Law

DFL is a lifelong supporter of the law through education. We’re investing in the next generation of Ontario lawyers with our financial support of key law schools in the province. In 2008, we kicked off the De Francesca Real Estate Law Award (Windsor Law) at the University of Windsor Law School to encourage students to follow careers in real estate law. In 2020, we launched a second De Francesca Real Estate Law Award (TMU, Lincoln Law) at the Lincoln Alexander Law School at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) that is recognized for its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the profession in the years ahead.

This year, we’ve expanded our support at TMU’s Lincoln Law with the De Francesca Property Law Award donated by Paul and Melita De Francesca to recognize excellence among Law 1 Property Law students. Also, last December, I took part in the gala festivities of Lincoln Alexander’s inaugural Celebrating Gifts in Action event, which was a special celebration to honour all of the scholarship and award laureates for 2022, and to share in the future vision of the school and its students.

In the Community

All of us at DFL are proud members of the local Toronto-Danforth community. Last October, we took another step forward in this support with our first-ever “Great Pumpkin Giveaway,” that’s slated to be a regular pre-Halloween event at our office that we can share with our friends and neighbours. By all accounts, our premiere event was a huge success, with a great turnout and about 200 pumpkins and giveaways being given away to our excited recipients.

We’re also strong believers in supporting the social, cultural and sports activities on display in the community. In 2023, we’re looking forward to the new season of Living with Shakespeare, which promises to be a celebration of the Bard’s poetry and plays.

As always, De Francesca Law is committed to supporting charitable activities and worthy causes in our local community. We were thrilled to restart our support of the Riverdale Share Concert for raising funds for local charitable organizations, and to continue funding the Withrow Park Ball Hockey League, young men’s division that we have done for the last 15 years. Also, we were proud to provide our assistance in Theatre De La Salle’s upcoming production of Willy Wonka at the end of April.

Lastly, DFL continues to support SOS Children’s Villages, dedicated to the plight of orphaned and abandoned children. Last year, we expanded our support to the SOS Village Greece. This is in addition to the SOS Village Africa and SOS Village Italy. Our support is ongoing in 2023.

In Conclusion…

Whatever the need or the circumstances, we’re always on hand to help. We are committed to DFL’s vision of excellence and striving to deliver the very best in quality, service and value every time, at all times. If you’d like to know more about us, visit our website or feel free to give our office a call at any time.
